CHURCH visitors at St Mary’s Church on James Street are facing hefty fines - for parking outside their place of worship.

Traffic wardens are now ticketing parishioners who park on the footpath at the church - something many have done for decades.

The issue has sparked such debate that church authorities have now pinned up warnings inside the church, advising that wardens are now checking the area on a daily basis.

They warn that people now can’t park on the path or a bricked area further out from the church, which has always been used.

‘Parking tickets have been issued to people parking in front of our church.

‘It is advisable for our Eucharistic adorers to use the car park behind our offices.

‘If this is full, please call into the office and we will assist you,’ a parish bulletin statement remarked.

It is believed that the matter has come to prominence in recent weeks after a number of worshippers returned to their vehicles after spending some time in the church to find tickets placed on them.
