Run of the Country raises €11,500 for Malta Services
SOME 40 adventurous motorcycle riders who donned their leathers and took to the open road for the Run of the Country 2017 recently have raised an amazing €11,551.50 for Malta Services Drogheda.
The Run of the Country is a hugely popular event, now in its seventh year and continues to grow in success. This year’s event took place on September 30th and proved to be no exception with a fantastic amount of support for the 40 riders on the day.
The 2017 event surpassed all expectations and raised a whopping €11,500, an amazing achievement.
To date the Run has raised over €83,500 for local charities and this is the second year for Malta Services to benefit.
After a hearty cooked breakfast, the bikers were all raring to get on the road. They were cheered on by Supporters at Malta Services, cruising down Duke Street, as they undertook the first leg of their mystery tour.
The route this year took the motorcycle riders through all the scenic back roads as far south as Gort and ending up in Longford, 405km of twisty roads through beautiful Irish countryside. The new M17 motorway was an option some of the bikers took. A fun poker run format was used, where playing cards were distributed at checkpoints during the run with prizes for the winning hands.
Malta Services Drogheda, support over 100 adults to live a life of their choosing by providing education and training, information and advice and practical assistance to support them to achieve their goals.
Funds raised from this event will go directly towards assisting people to work towards and achieve specific personal goals. Claire Byrne, Service Director of Malta Services highlighted some of the things that people spent their fundraising monies on last year. ‘A number of people used the funds to supplement different educational courses, others on trips up to the Aviva, as well as other social and sporting events. Once again, funds raised from this event will go directly towards assisting people to work towards and achieve specific personal goals’, she said.
Michael McCormick the key organiser of the event said ‘What makes this really special is the excitement on the morning at Malta Services, as the service users meet the bikers and have the craic.’
Sincere thanks were expressed to all the event sponsors including: Height for Hire, Kennedy Motorcycles, Tuites Butchers, BWG Drogheda Value Centre, Marks and Spencers, Glanbia, Tesco and Belview Eggs.
