Shopping trolleys are huge hazard for rescue workers

-

IT is hard to reason why people aimlessly dump shopping trolleys into the Boyne.

I came across this sight at the Ramparts recently and there were up to 10 trolleys all along the stretch.

I seem to recall some brave lads going to the rescue of a youngster who fell into the river one Christmas a few years ago and one shudders to think if they - or some other unfortunate - got caught in a trolley while struggling to stay afloat what the end result would be.

The rescue services on the Boyne do enormous good work but they too are being put at risk because of these actions.

Also, why do those rescue services have to spend their time taking these trolleys out of the river Boyne?

Cllr Paul Bell made a suggestion some time ago that shops be fined if their trolleys are found abandoned (that would be tough on them, but certainly would mean policing of the system).

Better still, those dumping trolleys in the Boyne - just stop,.
