Sun drenched procession to honour our famous saint
THE annual St Oliver Plunkett Festival weekend attracted thousands of pilgrims to the town, many taking part in the ‘camino’ on Friday and Saturday.
They visited all the churches in town and had a special ‘passport’ stamped to confirm they had completed the journey.
The event is proving increasingly popular, year after year.
Sunday saw the procession of St Oliver’s relics from the Holy Family church, through the town and up by the superbly decorated Dominican Church, where Fr Jim Donleavy greeted the walkers.
Groups from a wide area attended on the day and were led by the ONE.Amongst those taking part included the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal and the Legion of Mary along with the Knights of St Columbanus and cllrs, Tommy Byrne and Oliver Tully.
Archbishop Thaddeus Okolo, the Papal Nuncio, attended on the day for the first time to mark 75 years of the event.
