Walk and Talk event around Green Lanes and Dominican Friary

THE next Old Drogheda Society Walk n talk will take place on Wednesday July 11th next beginning at 7.30pm. Led by Community Historian, Brendan Matthews, the Evening will begin in Bolton Square, location of the weekly Saturday morning Market, where Brendan will talk about the old medieval industries & trades that were resident here, along with the origins of the markets area.

The Walk n Talk will then proceed through Green Lanes passed the site of the old 18th century Weavers Houses that once stood here. Brendan will then speak about the former Trade Union Hall at the junction of Green Lanes & Magdalene Street and he will also outline the tale of Irish/American ex-Union Army Officers who were regular visitors to the Union Hall during the 1860`s. The Walk will then go on through Magdalene Street, site of a horrific attack on a soldier’s wife in the early 19th century and the site of the old street water-pump that once stood here. The tour will then stop at the medieval ruins of the Dominican Friary and Magdalene Tower where again Brendan will outline the origins & history of the place.

The Walk n Talk will then head for Scarlet Street and terminates at the old town Jail where Brendan will complete the evening by speaking about the jail and some of its former inmates.
