Educate Together will be patron for new school at Colpe location

- By ALISON COMYN

DELIGHT has been expressed by parents and public representatives alike at the announcement that the Department of Education has awarded patronage of the new south Drogheda second-level school to Educate Together.

A massive online campaign was run to have the patronage awarded for the new 600-pupil school to Educate Together, and those behind it have called it a real victory for parent-power!

“I am so thrilled with the news, it is a dream come true!” says Mary Carty from the group ‘Educate Together Secondary School for Laytown/ Drogheda’.

“It was clear from our campaign that parents in the area wanted an Educate Together secondary school for their children. The level of support we received was outstanding. The Educate Together ethos emphasises inclusion, equality and diversity where every voice matters. I can’t wait to see the school grow and develop into the future.

“Thanks to everyone who supported us. It’s a great day for East Meath and Drogheda.”

Senator Ged Nash has also hailed the decision by the Department of Education ‘a victory for democracy and parent power.’

“I was delighted to have been involved in supporting this campaign, and actively canvassed and leafleted East Meath before the closing date for the receipt of submissions in order to support the campaign for an Educate Together post-primary school.” he said.

“I have been a longstanding supporter of the Educate Together model and it is satisfying to see the work of local parents and activists bearing fruit.

Fergus O’Dowd, TD for Louth and East Meath also welcomed the news, saying the new selection process was also a success.

“This patronage process was open to all patron bodies and prospective patrons and was the first-time parental preferences were analysed as part of selection process,” he explained. “This is a new method for deciding patronage and will represent constituents and their preferences more accurately going into the future.”

The online campaign received massive support in the Drogheda and East Meath and it’s a clear message from parents in the region.

“I’m so happy to see people powered change in action,” adds Mary.

“Parents came out and voted for a patron, and it’s really great to see this. I’m hopeful for the future and for a more equal and inclusive society.”
