Kids ready for move to secondary school
Hundreds of students got a nice surprise as they finished a sixth class like no other and looked ahead to life in second level education.
More than 550 transition packs have been delivered to students attending County Louth’s 18 DEIS primary schools.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Louth LEADER Partnership through the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) have networked successfully to co-ordinate ‘ The Transition Programme’.
This initiative supports 6th class pupils to alleviate their worries and concerns in making the brave move to secondary school through a range of discussions and activities in Finding my Way Around, Timetable, Managing my Locker, Homework, Equipment I Need, Making New Friends and New School Rules.
It is a partnership initiative in conjunction with five school completion programmes
The transition packs include a Mind the Gap workbook to support and manage children’s expectations to alleviate anxieties as they head to secondary school.
The pack also has a special celebratory party parcel to ensure children can mark and celebrate this momentous occasion safely at home with their families.

Officer, Louth LEADER Partnership said:
‘We are delighted to be networking with the local school completion programmes to deliver this initiative that enables us to address the challenges experienced by young people transitioning from primary school to secondary school.
‘Due to the current impacts of COVID-19, these young people are missing this significant milestone in their lives, and these packs will allow them to celebrate the occasion and prepare for the move in September.’
Niall Weldon, SCP Dún Dealgan Coordinator, added: ‘Successful transfer to secondary school can be a very positive contributing factor to a student’s long-term well-being and achievement in post-primary.’
