SOCCER NEWS

On Tuesday of last week, September 5, the Youths’ team took on Gorey Rangers in a challenge match in Boolavogue. The Gorey side are a top-notch team and gave our lads a great run out before the season proper starts. Near the break, goalie Jack Tyrell made a great save from a penalty to deny Rangers the lead. Almost immediately afterwards, Liam Walsh was pulled down in the area and Ryan Milling converted to give us a 1-0 lead at the break.

The skilled and creative Gorey team dominated the second half but were continually denied by our back four. Eventually, almost inevitably, Gorey drew level, their goal coming from a free kick but with time nearly up, Jack White put our lads 2-1 up, using a defensive blunder to snatch a fine goal.

The previous Sunday the ladies’ team had a practice game at home to Courtown Hibs and despite losing 4-1, can be rightfully delighted with their performance against a team which are placed several divisions higher. On the same day the men’s ‘B’ team got their league campaign off to a great start with a 6-2 win. Jamie Dempsey-Doyle and Dean Fortune had us 2-0 ahead at the break. A 10 – man Ferns team drew level early in the second half only for Jamie to put our lads 3-2 ahead. Goals from Jimmy Sweeny. James Dempsey-Doyle and Paul Fitzgerald made sure Ferns did not share the points.

The previous day, Saturday, September 2, the under-12s played their first game of teh season and mightly impressed with a 3-0 win over Courtown Hibs. Alex Keegan scored the first with James O’Leary getting the second and third goals. The Youths’ side were due to play Wexford Albion on Saturday but ended up with no game as the Wexford side withdrew from the competition.
