Wex­ford ex­presses its sor­row at US mas­sacre

BOOKS of Con­do­lence have been opened through­out the county in mem­ory of the hun­dreds killed and wounded in the mass shoot­ing in Las Ve­gas.

SPEAK­ING af­ter open­ing the book at County Coun­cil head­quar­ters in Wex­ford, coun­cil chair­man Cllr John He­garty said the peo­ple of Wex­ford and Ire­land stand united with the peo­ple of the United States.

‘FOR cen­turies, Ire­land and the United States have shared a unique bond forged through fam­ily, friend­ship, cul­ture, busi­ness and tourism,’ he said. ‘ TO­DAY, as the peo­ple of Wex­ford come to terms with this atroc­ity, we stand be­side the peo­ple of the US, united in sad­ness and in hor­ror at the na­ture and scale of this at­tack, while our thoughts and prayers are with the fam­i­lies of those peo­ple caught up in this un­speak­able act.’ Fifty-nine peo­ple were killed and more than 500 peo­ple were in­jured, most shot and some tram­pled in the rush to es­cape, when re­tired ac­coun­tant Stephen Pad­dock opened fire with ar­se­nal of high-pow­ered weapons from the 32nd floor of the Man­dalay Bay Ho­tel on crowds of peo­ple at­tend­ing a coun­try mu­sic fes­ti­val. No mo­tive has been yet been es­tab­lished for the killings, the dead­li­est mass shoot­ing in US his­tory. BOOKS of con­do­lence are open dur­ing busi­ness hours at The Book Cen­tre, South Main St., Wex­ford, Wex­ford County Coun­cil Of­fices, County Hall, Car­rick­lawn, New Ross Mu­nic­i­pal District Of­fices, The Tholsel, New Ross, En­nis­cor­thy Mu­nic­i­pal District Of­fice, Mar­ket Square, En­nis­cor­thy and Gorey Mu­nic­i­pal District Of­fices, Civic Square The Av­enue, Gorey. The books wil re­main open for sign­ing un­til Fri­day, Oc­to­ber 20.
