Ar­mistice Day in En­nis­cor­thy

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11 th month, En­nis co rt hy His­tor­i­cal Re-en­act­ment So­ci­ety will hold a se­ries of events to com­mem­o­rate Ar­mistice Day and re­mem­ber and hon­our all those from En­nis­cor­thy and Wex­ford who served in the Great War.

At 11 o’ clock on Novem­ber 11,1918 the Ar­mistice was signed be­tween the Al­lied and Ger­man Ar­mies at C om piegne,F rance of­fi­cially bring­ing to an end WW 1 hos­til­i­ties on the West­ern Front, and ev­ery year since then com­mem­o­ra­tions have been held in many coun­tries around the world at that time on that day.

Over 800 Wex­ford men were killed in the Great War, from Au­gust 1914 right up to Ar­mistice Day it­self when Nicholas Sane from Rowe Street, W ex ford was killed in France.

Ap­prox­i­mately, sixty-four En­nis­cor­thy men lost their lives in the war to end wars and the names in­clude Berry, Bishop, Bol­ger, Breen, Brien, Brooks, Brown, Byrne, Con­nors, Conroy, Copeland, Cos­grave, Cullen, De- laney, Dev­ereux, Dobbs, Doyle, Dunne, Dwyer, For­re­stal, Goode, Gor­man, Har­ris, James, Jones, Jor­dan, Ka­vanagh, Kelly, Kir­wan, Lacey, Lough­lin, McClean, McDon­ald, Ma­hon, Mer­nagh, Merriman, Mur­phy, Nolan, Henry, Neill, O`Shea, Pren­der­gast, Quirke, Red­mond, Roche, Sin­nott, Sun­der­land, Thorpe, Toole, Walsh and Whe­lan.

This year’s Ar­mistice Day cer­e­monies will be­gin with a lay­ing of a wreath at St Mary’s Church, En­nis­cor­thy at 10.30am fol­lowed by a cer­e­mony at Mar­ket Square to mark the 99th anniversary of the Ar­mistice.

From 11.30 am to 5 pm E HRS will be host­ing a Liv­ing His­tory dis­play attheAthenaeum, withRe-en­ac­tors, WW 1 arte facts and demon­stra­tions.

The Day of Re­mem­brance will cul­mi­nate with a spe­cial con­cert – March Away My Broth­ers – a med­ley of Ir­ish sol­dier’ s sto­ries and mu­sic by Bren­dan MacQuaile at 7pm at the Athenaeum.
