Trip down memory lane for St Peter’s Class of ‘93

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

SOME 55 past pupils of St Peter’s College had the chance to take a look around their old stomping ground recently as they returned to the school last week. Despite having left the school just over 25 years ago, the memories came flooding back for the class of 1993 as they were brought on a tour around the school as it is now by former teacher and Principal Mr Pat Quigley.

Perhaps more familiar to the group were the ‘older’ areas of the school and a visit to one of the now defunct dorms proved a particularly poignant moment for returning boarders. A stop off in the ball alleys also brought back great memories of sporting triumphs and mischief!

Mr Quigley proved an ideal guide for the group as they took a journey back into their own and the school’s past. He touched on aspects of history, pointed out some of the major updates at the school in the intervening years and some of the changes to teaching practice since the class of ‘93 were sat at the desks. A man of great passion for the school, the group were delighted to have him on board for the evening.

Current Principal Mr Robert O’Callaghan also spoke at the reunion, discussing the technological and sociological de velopments in approach to teaching as well as recent national changes to school enrolment policy and the potential impact they could have on the children of those present and the possible impact on the preservation of ethos from generation to generation.

Following the tour of the school, there was Mass in the chapel, celebrated by one of the class’ own - Franciscan Friar Fr Rory Doyle - who is the son of a former teacher at the school Mr Brian Doyle, who was also present.

Regrettably, his twin brother Brian, who is also in the Holy Orders, was unable to travel from Rome, but sent his apologies.

Dinner was then served in the refectory before everyone adjourned to The Swan Bar in the Faythe, where they were joined by former Principal Philip Quirke and teachers Tom Bolger, Paddy Ryan and Tom Tynan.

The organisers - Joe Bishop, Sean Meyler, Myles Sunderland, Ken Jones and Simon Hussey - wished to thank those who came from all quarters to make the evening so special and hopes are high that they can all reunite once again before another 25 years passes.
