A Malahide composition

Fingal Independent - - NEWS - John MANNING

A Malahide composer is about to launch a new collection of piano compositions for students. Malahide composer and international cellist, Ailbhe Mcdonagh has published her new collection of piano compositions for students entitled ‘It’s a Piano Thing - books 1 & 2’.

The official launch of her books will take place on Tuesday, September 26 at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. Mcdonagh has partnered with London based classical music publishers Boosey & Hawkes and the books are set for global release during 2017.

The compositions offer distinctive pupil-centred piano pieces – perfect for developing pianists of all ages. Mcdonagh, who has been composing piano pieces for over 25 years, offers 36 piano pieces that are delightfully tuneful and engaging. It has progressively higher-skill level pieces geared at beginner students up to Grade 5 level.

The titles of the pieces also resonate closely with many of the students to whom they are addressed. Hopscotch; Cool Cat Stroll; Birthday Morning; No Homework Day; Cheeky Tango; Hang Gliding; and new favourite, Razzle Dazzle.

The ‘fit-for-purpose’ focus of the Irish composer is further enhanced, for both students and teachers, by the provision of informative tips on style and technique for every piece contained in the collection.

The books come with audio demonstrations with the composer herself playing each piece.

This collection fills a gap in piano repertoire for beginners.

‘Teachers, students, and parents alike have been asking for additional suitable repertoire to play alongside the grade book pieces. I’m delighted to be now releasing It’s a Piano Thing’ said the Malahide composer,

she added: ‘I hope that everyone young and old learning the piano will find these collections extremely useful and enjoyable.’

Initial reaction to the new publications has been universally favourable. Dr. John O’conor, international concert pianist, has welcomed the compositions, saying: ‘This collection is a must for every student of the piano. Creative, fun, attractive pieces – each with a key instructional element. Mcdonagh gets it just right.’ Ailbhe Mcdonagh has a BA in Music Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM), Dublin and graduated with a Masters in Music from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, USA.

She has performed worldwide, as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician in locations such as the UK, France, Germany, Italy, China and the USA. She is on the cello faculty of the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

As a student, the Malahide composer was a winner of composition competitions at the Irish classical music festival ‘Feis Ceoil’ and also at the RIAM Dublin annual competitions.

Her piano compositions have been published for over 15 years in the RIAM Local Centre National Grade Examination system.

As an active professional musician and composer, she has been commissioned to write pieces for school ensembles, national music examinations and international festivals.

Composer and cellist, Ailbhe Mcdonagh.
