O’brien jumps at brilliant opportunity in Australia

Fingal Independent - - SPORT -

JUST prior to the final round of the Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island next week, the newly-crowned Western Australian 2017 Junior road race champion Callum O’brien, a former Skerries resident, has taken up the relished opportunity to ride a brand new Yamaha YZF R3 for top team BANHAMS WA, under the watchful eye of Rob Peters.

Fifteen-year-old Callum jumped at the opportunity to ride for BANHAMS WA, saying: ‘I’m delighted to have been given the chance to race the final two race meetings of the year for BANHAMS.

‘BANHAMS are without doubt the top team in Western Australia and have proved their pedigree with Sam Clarke in both Australian and British Superbikes. I can’t wait to get to Phillip Island to get out on the new bike, which is being prepared as we speak.’

The BANHAMS WA team will give Callum a fully prepared R3 Yamaha, which means that he can practise and race in both the ‘Over 300 Production’ class and the R3 Cup class, effectively doubling the track time he could get in previous meetings.

With no production class road racing in West Australia at the moment, due to Barbagallo race track still being closed to racing, all track time at the ASBK rounds has been premium to Callum.

The team have also been boosted by the continued support from Mark Gill of Leading Edge Motorcycle Sport. Mark has been helping Callum this season and believes that with the BANHAMS set-up, Callum will have the machinery and support which is crucial to being competitive.

Callum will set off today (Tuesday), travelling to Phillip Island for the final round of the national Australian Superbikes Series, and then compete in the Supersport 300 support class at the Moto GP round in a few weeks’ time.

Callum is so grateful to the people that have come together to make this all happen in such a short time frame, particularly Rob from BANHAMS WA, Mark from Leading Edge Motorcycle Sport and Registered Painters WA.

We wish Callum all the best for the rest of the season.

Keep ‘er lit!

Callum O’brien has received valuable sponsorship from Marcus from ‘The Grinning Dingo’ for his next outing at Phillip Island.
