Service remembers Garda Anne Marie and pilots
Five uniform hats - four from the Irish Coast Guard, and one Garda Síochána, laid side by side by on the altar at last weekend’s Remembrance Sunday service at Christ Church, Gorey, brought into sharp focus the reason why everyone was there.
Pilots Captain Dara Fitzpatrick and Captain Mark Duffy, and crew members Paul Ormsby and Ciaran Smith were lost off the west coast in March when the Coast Guard Rescue 116 helicopter crashed at sea. Closer to home, colleagues at Gorey Garda Station are still mourning the recent loss of Garda Anne Marie Bolger, who died suddenly at her home recently.
Wreaths were laid at the altar by numerous uniformed and non-uniformed organisations, in memory of all who have given their lives in so many ways, in war, in peacekeeping, or in service of others.
The service was led by Canon Mark Hayden, with music by the Arklow Shipping Band, Gorey Pipe Band, the Fun and Fellowship Choir, and the Cantabile choir, and a sermon by Fr Richard Lawless.
