Spe­cial Olympians fundrais­ing for Ire­land Games

FOR­MER CAMO­GIE All Star and All Ire­land win­ner Mags D’Arcy was on hand at Wex­ford Golf Club re­cently to launch Wex­ford Spe­cial Olympics Club’s fundrais­ing Grand Raf­fle.

The club, which is send­ing 23 ath­letes to this year’s Ire­land Games, is in fundrais­ing mode as they need to raise €15,000 to cover costs of at­tend­ing the games and the gen­eral run­ning of the club.

The Grand Raf­fle of­fers tick­ets for €2 or six tick­ets for €10, and they are avail­able from com­mit­tee mem­bers, par­ents and ath­letes.

A great se­lec­tion of prizes are up for grabs in the Grand Raf­fle, win­ners of which will be drawn on Fri­day, March 2 in Wex­ford Golf Club. First and sec­ond prizes, spon­sored by Club Chair­man Peadar Dempsey, are a 32-inch flat-screen TV and a mu­sic sys­tem re­spec­tively. Third prizes is a €100 voucher for Kelly’s Ho­tel, with a €100 voucher for Pet­titt’s the fourth prize. Fifth prize is a €50 voucher for Londis Pierces­town; sixth and sev­enth prize is six bot­tles of wine; and eight prize is two bags of coal from Ben­son Fu­els.

Speak­ing at the launch, Mags spoke about the im­por­tance of sports and com­mended the ef­fort put in by all of the ath­letes tak­ing part. She wished the com­pet­ing group the very best of luck and pledged her sup­port for them.

The Ire­land Games take place in Dublin from June 14 to 17 and the raf­fle is the first of a num­ber of fundrais­ing events that will take place be­tween now and then.

The 23 ath­letes trav­el­ling to the games in­clude: Kevin Kin­sella, Ca­role Ryan, Dar­ragh Mo­ran athletics; Dean O’Con­nor, Shan­non O’Far­rell Mol­loy, Carima Mur­phy - Aquat­ics/Swim­ming; Mar­ian Flood, Jenna Carthy, Sarah Her­lihy, Claire Meagher - Bas­ket­ball; Darby Power - Bocce; Christo­pher Nolan, Philip Clancy - Pitch and Putt; Paul Keane, Nathan Fer­rick, Katie Dixon, Lisa Red­mond, Colleen Flood, Lisa McKeg­ney - Artis­tic Gym­nas­tics; Rosie Mur­phy, Brid­get Cow­man, Re­becca Eydt, and Jen­nie O’Brien Rhyth­mic Gym­nas­tics.

The club was founded 13 years ago, fol­low­ing the suc­cess of the 2003 World Games in Dublin.
