Special Olympians fundraising for Ireland Games
FORMER CAMOGIE All Star and All Ireland winner Mags D’Arcy was on hand at Wexford Golf Club recently to launch Wexford Special Olympics Club’s fundraising Grand Raffle.
The club, which is sending 23 athletes to this year’s Ireland Games, is in fundraising mode as they need to raise €15,000 to cover costs of attending the games and the general running of the club.
The Grand Raffle offers tickets for €2 or six tickets for €10, and they are available from committee members, parents and athletes.
A great selection of prizes are up for grabs in the Grand Raffle, winners of which will be drawn on Friday, March 2 in Wexford Golf Club. First and second prizes, sponsored by Club Chairman Peadar Dempsey, are a 32-inch flat-screen TV and a music system respectively. Third prizes is a €100 voucher for Kelly’s Hotel, with a €100 voucher for Pettitt’s the fourth prize. Fifth prize is a €50 voucher for Londis Piercestown; sixth and seventh prize is six bottles of wine; and eight prize is two bags of coal from Benson Fuels.
Speaking at the launch, Mags spoke about the importance of sports and commended the effort put in by all of the athletes taking part. She wished the competing group the very best of luck and pledged her support for them.
The Ireland Games take place in Dublin from June 14 to 17 and the raffle is the first of a number of fundraising events that will take place between now and then.
The 23 athletes travelling to the games include: Kevin Kinsella, Carole Ryan, Darragh Moran athletics; Dean O’Connor, Shannon O’Farrell Molloy, Carima Murphy - Aquatics/Swimming; Marian Flood, Jenna Carthy, Sarah Herlihy, Claire Meagher - Basketball; Darby Power - Bocce; Christopher Nolan, Philip Clancy - Pitch and Putt; Paul Keane, Nathan Ferrick, Katie Dixon, Lisa Redmond, Colleen Flood, Lisa McKegney - Artistic Gymnastics; Rosie Murphy, Bridget Cowman, Rebecca Eydt, and Jennie O’Brien Rhythmic Gymnastics.
The club was founded 13 years ago, following the success of the 2003 World Games in Dublin.
