No disruptions to Gorey Meals on Wheels
Gorey Meals on Wheels delivered to all houses early Thursday morning after the red weather warning was issued the previous day.
Chairman of Gorey Meals on Wheels Colin Webb said they made an appeal for extra volunteers to help out on Thursday and could not get over the response they received. The extra number of people meant the deliveries could be done quicker before the snow storm hit Gorey Thursday afternoon around 4 p.m.
Colin said Gorey Meals on Wheels will go ahead as normal this week after council workers and local volunteers helped clear pathways for people to commute.
‘Thankfully we had no disruptions to our service,’ said Colin. ‘Extra volunteers came on board and we got all meals delivered to everyone by 12.30 p.m. on Thursday.’
Colin said St Aidan’s Day Care Centre, where they cook their meals, were closing on Thursday at 12.30 p.m. so they had to prepare everything early in the morning.
‘We made a small judgement and decided we needed the extra hands, we split up the routes so we could get it done quickly,’ added Colin.
Gorey Meals on Wheels deliver fourdays a week, Monday to Thursday, to 50 people in the Gorey and Courtown areas. ‘We were lucky the snow storm did not affect us too badly,’ said Colin.
During the last bad snow of 2010, Colin said they made an appeal to any four by four drivers who could help.
‘I have been working with Meals on Wheels for 25 years and not once have we missed a day of deliveries and we have no intentions to either,’ said Colin.
Gorey Meals on Wheels has 50 customers, with 40 currently on the waiting list. ‘The demand is high and we simply can’t provide for all,’ added Colin.
The voluntary organisation would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave a helping hand on Thursday. They are overwhelmed by the large response.
