Draft plan in place for Esmonde Street

- By SARA GAHAN

A draft plan of Esmonde Street Improvement Works was presented to the Gorey Municipal District councillors at last week’s meeting.

The proposed drawings prepared by Lisa Woods included a redesign of the roundabout; construction of an archway feature at the top of Esmonde Street; the controlled crossings before Gorey Community School taken out and two courtesy crossings put in; seating area for Gorey Community School students; and a proposed redesign of the Back Lane.

‘We will just have one controlled crossing at the school,’ added Ms Woods.

A total of five car park spaces will be gone if they go ahead with the idea of a pedestrianised zone and seating area at the school for the students.

‘There would also be a bike stand location,’ said Ms Woods.

District Manager Amanda Byrne welcomed the idea of the renewed Back Lane and said it would be a safer way for students to get to the school.

Cllr Malcolm Byrne is very supportive of the proposed plans for Esmonde Street and said the archway feature is a brilliant idea.

‘It will enhance the street and the image of the town,’ said Cllr Byrne.

Ms Woods said there would be no designated cycle lane on the street as it would be a shared surface. ‘We would put up signage in places to let motorists know that cyclists will be using it also,’ said Ms Woods.

Ms Byrne told councillors no final decision has been made yet.
