STARS SET TO SHINE IN CREATION CONCERT

- By DAVID LOOBY

FANS of choral music in New Ross and surrounding areas can look forward to a wonderful event on Sunday, March 11, when New Ross Singers will present ‘The Creation’ by Haydn in the Church of the Assumption, Rosbercon, at 8 p.m.

Haydn completed his score in 1798 and in recitatives, arias and choruses describes the wonder and perfection of the newly created world. The stunning orchestral accompaniment depicts the darkness and chaos of pre-creation, the coming of light, the division of water and land, the creation of animals and, finally, humans. ‘The Creation’ is regarded as one of the most outstanding oratorios of all time and enormous credit is due to New Ross Singers for tackling this challenging work. As usual, the choir has engaged top class soloists – Deirdre Moynihan, Ryan Morgan and Brendan Collins – and an experienced and highly-regarded orchestra, Musici Ireland. A choir spokesperson said: ‘We have always maintained that it is very worthwhile to have the best possible soloists and orchestra and we have managed to achieve that for each of our major concerts, while still keeping ticket prices reasonable.’

New Ross Singers have been performing for more than 30 years and numbers over 50 members. In recent years they have thrilled audiences with performances of major choral works, including Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Jenkin’s ‘The Armed Man’, Faure’s ‘Requiem”’and, most recently, Gounod’s ‘Mass of St. Cecilia’. Director Connie Tantrum said she is delighted that the choir can rise to the challenge of such works but is eager to point out that they also sing lighter music and their wide-ranging repertoire appeals to all tastes. For the upcoming performance the choir will welcome guest choristers from West Cork Choral Singers, who presented ‘The Creation’ in Skibbereen in October when they were joined by members of New Ross Singers.
