Reflexology is 4,000 years old. What it is and how does it help?

-

REFLEXOLOGY is known to be more than 4,000 years old and thought to originate in Egypt. The Chinese also used it in conjunction with Acupuncture.

An American ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr William Fitzgerald, researched reflexology while working in London and Vienna in the early 19th century and on his return to America he brought his findings on the benefits to the attention of colleagues and wider audiences. One of these was a physiotherapist,

Eunice Ingham, pictured right, became fascinated by the potential benefits and decided to train as a reflexologist. She then resigned from her position within the hospital to set up a reflexologist’s practice in the 1930s. News of her success spread and people from all over America came to her for treatments.

She wrote books and opened a school specifically to train reflexologists. She dedicated 40 years of her life to the practice and teaching of reflexology.

The many benefits reflexology helps with range from anxiety, stomach problems, depression, bringing calmness to the mind, and many other health problems. It does not cure anything but by manipulating the pressure points that are all over the feet, it gently stimulates all the systemsandorgansofthebody which brings a sense of total relaxation to both physical and emotional ailments.

Cancer care reflexology is slightly different as it is a much gentler treatment and having worked in the Hope Centre for the past two and a half years the feedback I get constantly from clients that are going through cancer or their supporters is amazing – they sleep better, feel less anxious and more relaxed in themselves. They very much look forward to their next appointment as they feel that it is a happy welcoming distraction from their schedule of hospital or doctor appointments.

They find it also helps them to cope with the stress chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment can bring.

Reflexology is a treatment that just has to be experienced as every body has a different experience. We are all individuals, with our own individual health concerns, whether it’s on a physical, mental or an emotional level.

In the Hope Centre we start off with 8 treatments and schedule appointments around hospital appointments, so that you can enjoy your treatment and its benefits when you really need it.

For further information or to arrange an appointment, please contact the Hope Centre in Enniscorthy.

(Thanks to reflexologist Catherine Breen)
