A loo-ky escape from a costly toilet trip

March 1988

-

A visit to Gorey’s new £40,000 ‘Superloo’ last Wednesday almost turned into a very costly toilet trip for a local man, as he was almost at the loss of £175 in addition to his 10p ‘spend a penny’ fee.

Loo-kily, the size of his wallet prevented the money from being flushed down the drain.

The man had just withdrawn the money from the Post Office when he decided to pay his first visit to the nearby new musical superloo on The Avenue. And it turned out to be a visit he is never likely to forget!

It appears that while doing his business, his wallet somehow slipped from his trouser pocket into the toilet itself, and he had gone some way from the loo afterwards before realising that the wallet was missing.

He retraced his steps and was forced to conclude that the loss had occurred in the loo itself. Panicked over the loss of his money, he contacted Gorey Town Commissioner Michael Hobbs, who in turn advised him to contact Wexford Co. Council’s Engineering Department in Gorey.

They then contacted Street Furniture Ltd., Wexford, the firm which maintains the superloo for the Co. Council and the Town Commissioners. The firm’s maintenance man visited the loo, and lo and behold, against all the odds, eh found the wallet and the money underneath the floor of the superloo.

The money was returned to the delighted man, who could not believe his luck. Apparently, the size of the wallet had just saved it from disappearing down the sewer. If the wallet had been slightly smaller, it would have disappeared forever.
