Student caught with cannabis must make €1,500 donation
SEAN Curran (20), Clough, Gorey, was handed a bill for €1,500 after cannabis worth €250 was seized by Garda Gavin Tracy.
Giving evidence at the District Court, the garda recalled how he noted Curran acting suspiciously in Gorey’s Main Street on the night of January 20.
The cannabis was handed over later by the accused who was represented before Judge Kevin Staunton by solicitor Lana Doherty.
She told the court that her client was a third level student due back in college at the end of September.
In the meantime he was earning €400 weekly in a summer job.
The defendant had the support of his family in meeting the case and Ms Doherty also mentioned that he had relatives in Canada.
The judge was concerned by the quantity of drugs involved but accepted that Curran had never been in trouble with the law before or since.
He invited the young man to make a contribution of €1,500 to the Cornmarket, indicating that the matter would be struck out once the money is paid.
The case was adjourned until December to allow Curran make the payment.
