Stu­dent caught with cannabis must make €1,500 do­na­tion

SEAN Curran (20), Clough, Gorey, was handed a bill for €1,500 af­ter cannabis worth €250 was seized by Garda Gavin Tracy.

Giv­ing ev­i­dence at the District Court, the garda re­called how he noted Curran act­ing sus­pi­ciously in Gorey’s Main Street on the night of Jan­uary 20.

The cannabis was handed over later by the ac­cused who was rep­re­sented be­fore Judge Kevin Staunton by solic­i­tor Lana Do­herty.

She told the court that her client was a third level stu­dent due back in col­lege at the end of Septem­ber.

In the mean­time he was earn­ing €400 weekly in a sum­mer job.

The de­fen­dant had the sup­port of his fam­ily in meet­ing the case and Ms Do­herty also men­tioned that he had rel­a­tives in Canada.

The judge was con­cerned by the quan­tity of drugs in­volved but ac­cepted that Curran had never been in trou­ble with the law be­fore or since.

He in­vited the young man to make a con­tri­bu­tion of €1,500 to the Corn­mar­ket, in­di­cat­ing that the mat­ter would be struck out once the money is paid.

The case was ad­journed un­til De­cem­ber to al­low Curran make the pay­ment.
