Joseph Arthur

@hotpress: Hi Joseph, are you excited to start your European tour?

@JosephArthur: Yeah I’m really looking forward to it! I was touring with my band RNDM earlier this year so I’m looking forward to going solo.

@hotpress: How does solo touring compare to touring with a band?

@JosephArthur: They’re completely different projects. I like to be creative with technology when I’m working solo, and there’s a lot of potential for me to do that. Touring solo pushes me to be creative, to give the audience something new.

@hotpress: Do you have any tricks up your sleeve for the Dublin audience?

@JosephArthur: Oh yeah, get ready to have your heads exploded! I can’t say more than that, but my new album The Family was a very involved production and something really new for me, musically, so it’ll be a challenge to perform it live.

@hotpress: The album title suggests that it’s very personal. Is that the case?

@JosephArthur: Yeah. A lot of it is quite personal. Some of these stories are fictionalised because I didn’t want to make it a laborious autobiography. I want to create family stories that listeners could relate to.

@hotpress: Did your family react positively to the album?

@JosephArthur: Uhhhh, for the most part… You know, being a writer, you gotta write from experience, that’s how people know you have an authentic voice. You can’t get away from that. You have to hope that the people in your life can understand what you’re doing. A lot of the time, the writer is on the chopping block more than anyone.

@hotpress: Moving from the personal to the political, you’ve written a protest song against Donald Trump.

@JosephArthur: Yeah I think, with music, you can be safe and not political and just do songs that both the left and right could get behind. But I’ve never shied away from things, whether it’s religion or politics.

@hotpress: Has ‘The Campaign Song’ attracted negative feedback?

@JosephArthur: I think it’s attracted a lot of attention from the ‘right’ side. But I try to steer clear of social media once I post things. That’s the trick, don’t read the comment, don’t look at it again, just leave it!

@hotpress: Is Hillary much better?

@JosephArthur: It’s interesting, when I recorded the anti-Trump song, I was a Bernie supporter. Then when it was released, it was down to Trump vs Hillary. I was listening to Hillary’s graduation speech recently and I found it pretty inspiring. I do think she’s doing a lot better. I tend to be optimistic about our country with her in charge.
