You got a lot of things right in your cover story last issue on Trump, the self-styled alt-right and a whole lot more besides. But I don’t think even you anticipated just how appallingly stupid, small-minded and nasty the new President of the US was going to be.

Sure, I know there is a view that all of these executive orders – royal decrees, anyone? – issued during his first week are essentially for show. But if so, then why were they acted upon with such indecent haste by the immigration authorities? The effect has been predictably inflammatory. Muslims in the US are feeling under threat as never before.

Trump was crass enough to say that he intended to expedite the movement of Christians from those countries arriving in America. In other words, he is directly discriminating against people on the basis of their religion. That, of course, is unconstitutional.

Which begs the question: who is going to haul him before the courts and when? The sooner it happens the better. The man is a menace – to us all.
