Ayurveda is about find­ing bal­ance in life and be­ing in tune with na­ture. YOU health ed­i­tor Sarah Stacey writes: ‘Ayurveda dis­tin­guishes three mind-body types based on the five el­e­ments that are the build­ing blocks of ev­ery­thing in the uni­verse, in­clud­ing the hu­man body: space, air, fire, wa­ter and earth. These el­e­ments com­bine in vary­ing amounts to form three dif­fer­ent meta­bolic types or ‘doshas’ – Vata (where air is prom­i­nent), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth) – which in­flu­ence both per­son­al­ity and phys­i­cal char­ac­ter­is­tics.’
