So­daStream taps beer mar­ket

IT was the must-have gad­get of the 1970s be­fore its pop­u­lar­ity fiz­zled out. But So­daStream is now hop­ing to make a come­back – by at­tract­ing lager drinkers into ‘home brew­ing’.

The com­pany is look­ing to form a beer part­ner­ship that will push its car­bon­ated wa­ter ma­chines into homes again.

Chief ex­ec­u­tive Daniel Birn­baum yes­ter­day re­vealed that the com­pany is in dis­cus­sions with po­ten­tial part­ners that will pro­vide liq­uid beer con­cen­trates to pair with its ma­chines in the next 12 months.

It comes af­ter tri­als in coun­tries such as Ger­many, Switzer­land and Aus­tria, saw So­dastream of­fer con­cen­trates that cre­ated a 5% lager with its ma­chines, which use gas cylin­ders to car­bon­ate reg­u­lar tap wa­ter. Users are pro­vided with con­cen­trated beer to put in their glass.
