MOTORING industry experts yesterday criticised new legislation which will make Irish drivers pay almost €3 more per car tyre.

The new Visible Environmental Management Cost will add €2.80 to the price of a car tyre and €1.50 to each motorbike tyre, with funds used to pay for the safe disposal of all end-of-life tyres.

Environment Minister Denis Naughten said the move will stop the dumping of thousands of tyres every year. It’s estimated there are up to 750,000 old tyres stockpiled across Ireland.

However, the tyre industry argued there is a lack of awareness of the new legislation among consumers, and called on the Minister to announce a high-profile publicity campaign to make drivers aware of what is happening.

Speaking to RTÉ News, industry expert Robert Ferguson said: ‘If we don’t get enforcement, the scheme will collapse before it even begins.’
