STAUNCH SUPPORTER OF THE WEEK

JONATHAN Rhys Meyers was ‘denied hospital help twice in Ireland’, according to his wife Mara, because of a ‘two-month wait’. She has been staunch in his defence since a bystander posted pictures of him looking drunk in Dublin Airport and Mara revealed that she’d just suffered a miscarriage, which he had taken badly. Describing him as ‘the strongest person I know’, she praised him for turning ‘the ugliness in his life into art’ and said she couldn’t watch him being attacked for relapsing ‘at such a tender time’. He is unlucky that his fame makes him a target, given his problems, but it sounds like he is exceptionally fortunate in the woman he married.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

IT’S called ‘sologamy’, it started in Japan but now it’s catching on in Europe. This week an Italian woman married herself, complete with dress, bridesmaids and 70 guests. ‘Each of us must first of all love ourselves,’ said Laura Mesi as she cut the cake topped with the figure of a lone bride. Laura popped the question to herself when she found herself single at 40, but she still hopes to find a man ‘with whom I can plan a future’ – after she’s divorced herself, obviously. Let’s hope she has a good lawyer.
