My marriage is over – it’s my little girl who keeps me going, says DJ Nikki
BROADCASTER Nikki Hayes has told how her marriage disintegrated this year due to her struggles with mental health issues. The 38-year-old DJ said her marriage to Army mechanic Frank Black foundered in May after just over two years but they are still devoted parents to their daughter Farrah, four.
Nikki, who works with Classic Hits 4FM and East Coast Radio, has just published a book called Crying Into The Saucepan about her life following a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. ‘My marriage broke up in May,’ said the broadcaster, pictured. ‘I still have not fully come to terms with things. I have tears some days but she [Farrah] keeps me going because I need to be there for her.’
Shortly after she married in 2015 Nikki suffered a breakdown which led to the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. She believes her struggle with illness contributed to her marriage break-up, saying: ‘With me being ill over the last two years, I was in and out of hospital and it just took its toll.’
Nikki and Frank have remained on good terms, and work hard to ensure Farrah has everything she needs. Nikki restructured her working hours this year, going freelance, to accommodate her daughter.
‘More than ever Farrah needs a bit of stability in her life,’ Nikki said. ‘The way I work now suits my life.’
Nikki has become ambassador for the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards and is urging young people who volunteer to enter before October 20. As a teen, Nikki volunteered as a companion for the elderly and said: ‘Volunteering was an amazing experience.’
