19 mi­grants die in Libya crash

AT LEAST 19 il­le­gal mi­grants have been killed in a lorry crash near the Libyan town of Bani Walid, about 180km south­east of the cap­i­tal Tripoli.

The chief of Bani Walid hospi­tal, Mo­hamed el-Mabruk, said 60 others were in­jured when the ve­hi­cle over­turned early yes­ter­day.

He said more than 200 mi­grants, mostly from Eritrea, So­ma­lia and Su­dan, were on board. The cause of the crash was not clear. Libya has be­come a ma­jor tran­sit point for mi­grants from across Africa and the Mid­dle East hop­ing to reach Europe.
