Westmeath pile the pressure on Armagh

- PAUL KEANE

COLM COLLINS, the Clare manager, said there’s ‘something badly wrong’ when a great player like Westmeath’s John Heslin hasn’t got an All-Star. If Heslin is frustrated it’s not apparent. He and Westmeath could easily have thrown in the towel at several times during yesterday’s 0-14 to 1-9, Division 3 win over Fermanagh which has shaken up the entire promotion race. Armagh still lead Division 3 on 10 points thanks to Saturday’s 1-15 to 0-14 win over Derry but Westmeath are now immediately behind them on eight points alongside Fermanagh. Longford missed out on the chance to join the duo on eight points by drawing 2-12 to 0-18 with Sligo. Longford had trailed 0-9 to 0-5 at half-time, kicked 11 wides in total and conceded 10 points without reply in a period between the 23rd and 40th minute. Meanwhile, Offaly threw themselves a lifeline on Saturday when they beat Wexford 1-13 to 1-10.
