Never mind the terrifying volcano... it’s a fair way off

AS GOLFING hazards go, you’d think a 3,650-metre high volcanic ash plume would be difficult to ignore.

But these hardy golfers didn’t appear to see it as a handicap as they played on in front of apocalypti­c scenes emitting from the Kilauea volcano behind them on Hawaii’s Big Island. Several golf courses are close to the danger zone, including the appropriat­ely named Volcano Golf & Country Club.

Ash has been wafting continuous­ly from Kilauea’s crater, Halemaumau, since May 3 – causing pollution up to 30 kilometres away, the Hawaiian Volcano Observator­y said.

Authoritie­s have issued a ‘red’ warning for pilots and air-traffic controller­s.
