Never mind the terrifying volcano... it’s a fair way off
AS GOLFING hazards go, you’d think a 3,650-metre high volcanic ash plume would be difficult to ignore.
But these hardy golfers didn’t appear to see it as a handicap as they played on in front of apocalyptic scenes emitting from the Kilauea volcano behind them on Hawaii’s Big Island. Several golf courses are close to the danger zone, including the appropriately named Volcano Golf & Country Club.
Ash has been wafting continuously from Kilauea’s crater, Halemaumau, since May 3 – causing pollution up to 30 kilometres away, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.
Authorities have issued a ‘red’ warning for pilots and air-traffic controllers.
