Teen girl in all-male hospital ward ‘was sexually assaulted’
GARDAÍ have launched an investigation following an alleged sexual assault of a teenage patient at Cork University Hospital earlier this week.
The girl, who had been in an accident earlier this month, had been placed in an allmale ward when she was allegedly assaulted by a male patient.
The girl claimed she was asleep when, at around 5am on Monday, a patient in his 60s approached her and sexually assaulted her. Senior sources say that the attacker is accused of ‘groping’ rather than a ‘serious sexual assault’.
A source added: ‘Gardaí are in no way minimising such an incident but the attack is at the lower end of the scale.’
The girl also alleged that the man then asked her for a kiss before she managed to raise the alarm.
CUH confirmed that staff were assisting gardaí with an investigation.
Gardaí plan to speak to nursing staff on duty at the time of the alleged assault, and also hope to speak to the man.
However, the man is due to undergo heart surgery this week and officers will not be able to speak to him until he is deemed fit for interview by doctors.
