Was Taoiseach’s attack due to Lowry questions?
COULD Leo Varadkar’s attack on the media have been prompted by awkward questions about Michael Lowry.
Only a day ahead of his criticism, the Taoiseach was asked about an apparent contradiction between his comments about Lowry and those of his spokesman, who said no ‘special arrangement’ existed between him and the TD – who usually votes with the Government and who was convicted last week of tax offences.
The TD told the Irish Mail on Sunday in an interview this week that Mr Varadkar had asked for and received his ‘unconditional’ support in the vote to become Taoiseach.
And when Mr Varadkar was quizzed by this newspaper about the Lowry interview he admitted that he had ‘naturally rung around a number of independent TDs’ in his bid to become Taoiseach and he confirmed that he himself had raised the issue of Clonmel hospital and other issues in Lowry’s constituency during the phone call.
