Heartening heroism

-

FOR 17 days the lives of 12 young boys and their coach, trapped in a cave in Thailand, have hung in the balance, and the world has held its breath this week as rescuers risked their own lives to bring the youngsters to safety.

Thankfully there was a happy ending yesterday, but in the midst of all the celebrations we must not forget the true heroism involved in returning these boys to their families. That so many countries cooperated on the perilous operation and worked so well together is extremely heartening.

That Saman Kunan, the former Thai navy Seal, a diver of immense experience and expertise, perished during the operation only serves to underscore the heroism of those who persevered to the very end. A week ago, the boys’ future looked bleak. Today, they are back above ground and reunited with their families.

Those who risked their own lives are due an enormous debt of gratitude and deserve to be truly celebrated around the world.
