EC: Prepare for a no-deal Brexit

Irish Daily Mail - - News -

AN internal European Commission document has been circulated warning member states to ramp up preparations for a no-deal Brexit.

The document was produced before the UK’s Brexit White Paper – which pushes the UK towards a soft Brexit – was published.

‘Drawing up contingency plans for the worst possible outcome is not a sign of mistrust in the negotiations,’ the document states.

The paper notes that a number of issues are still unresolved, including the border issue.

‘No progress has been made in agreeing a “backstop” to avoid, independently of the outcome of the negotiations of the future partnership, a hard border on the island of Ireland,’ RTÉ News and international media outlets reported the document as stating.

Speaking in Westport, Co. Mayo, yesterday, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the document did not mean a no-deal Brexit was imminent.

The paper from the European Commission will be a topic of discussion at next week’s meeting of the Cabinet in Kerry.
