Pop art! Hockney makes Sheeran his latest model

- By Jennifer Ruby

HE has been a fan of David Hockney since childhood. Now Ed Sheeran has gone from admirer to muse.

A portrait of the singer has been unveiled in Los Angeles as part of a new show by the celebrated artist, 81.

In charcoal and crayon on canvas, it depicts the 27-yearold sitting in an armchair while wearing black jeans and a white T-shirt which reveals his numerous tattoos.

Sheeran shared an image of the portrait on his Instagram account after it went on display at the LA Louver gallery on Thursday night, captioning it: ‘Me by David Hockney.’

The singer and the artist, both born in Yorkshire, met for the first time in 2017, with Sheeran posting a picture of them dining together.

‘Absolute honour to get to spend some time with one of my favourite artists of all time,’ he wrote then. ‘He was my first introduction as a child to art that I really connected to and I can’t quite believe we got to eat pie together and talk about Yorkshire.’

Last year Hockney revealed he would be going to France to capture spring scenes for his next series of paintings.

‘It will be stunning,’ he said. ‘It makes me get up and have a spring in my step – the thought of being able to see spring with all its growth and beauty and to be able to record that.’

At the beginning of March he will visit Amsterdam for an exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum featuring his works alongside Van Gogh’s, dubbed ‘the Dave and Vince show’.
