Suspect in planned Hutch hit is found dead in jail
Inmate arrested last week after guns & ammo seized from vehicle
A MAN found dead in his jail cell yesterday was suspected to be involved in a planned gangland hit.
Glen O’toole, who was in his 30s, was in Cloverhill Prison on remand after he was arrested on October 4 following a Garda operation in Ashtown, Co Dublin. A firearm, a number of rounds of ammunition, a Halloween mask and a container of petrol were discovered in the vehicle. A female in her 30s, who was also in the vehicle at the time, was arrested at the time but has since been released without charge and a file has been sent to the DPP. The man, from Finglas, Co Dublin, was known to gardai and was understood to have had connections with the Hutch gang who are currently involved in a bloody feud with the ruthless Kinahan cartel which has claimed 12 lives to date. His body was found in his cell yesterday at 6am. There were no other inmates in the cell with him at the time and his death is not being treated as suspicious. One line of inquiry being investigated is that he took his own life. He was due to appear at Cloverhill District Court yesterday for further remand. A spokesman for the Irish Prison Service confirmed his death and said an investigation is under way. He said: “I can confirm an inmate at Cloverhill Prison passed away early this morning. “As with all deaths in custody An Garda Siochana, the Inspector of prisons and the Irish Prison Service will be investigating the matter. At this stage foul play is not suspected. “The cause of death is determined by a jury on the basis of the information presented to the Coroner’s Court. “The circumstances of each death in custody and incident of self-harm are also examined by a suicide prevention group in each institution. To date, 11 inmates have died in custody this year. There were five deaths last year and 14 in 2015. Last January, Tomas Abukevicius died of suspected suicide at Dublin’s Mountjoy Prison. The 24-year-old was six months into a 16-month term for assaulting a garda when he was found hanged in his cell on December 30. He died on January 4 at the Mater Hospital after medics turned his life support off.
