Sus­pect in planned Hutch hit is found dead in jail

In­mate ar­rested last week af­ter guns & ammo seized from ve­hi­cle

A MAN found dead in his jail cell yes­ter­day was sus­pected to be in­volved in a planned gang­land hit.

Glen O’toole, who was in his 30s, was in Clover­hill Prison on re­mand af­ter he was ar­rested on Oc­to­ber 4 fol­low­ing a Garda op­er­a­tion in Ash­town, Co Dublin. A firearm, a num­ber of rounds of am­mu­ni­tion, a Hal­loween mask and a con­tainer of petrol were dis­cov­ered in the ve­hi­cle. A fe­male in her 30s, who was also in the ve­hi­cle at the time, was ar­rested at the time but has since been re­leased with­out charge and a file has been sent to the DPP. The man, from Fin­glas, Co Dublin, was known to gardai and was un­der­stood to have had con­nec­tions with the Hutch gang who are cur­rently in­volved in a bloody feud with the ruth­less Ki­na­han car­tel which has claimed 12 lives to date. His body was found in his cell yes­ter­day at 6am. There were no other in­mates in the cell with him at the time and his death is not be­ing treated as sus­pi­cious. One line of in­quiry be­ing in­ves­ti­gated is that he took his own life. He was due to ap­pear at Clover­hill District Court yes­ter­day for fur­ther re­mand. A spokesman for the Ir­ish Prison Ser­vice con­firmed his death and said an in­ves­ti­ga­tion is un­der way. He said: “I can con­firm an in­mate at Clover­hill Prison passed away early this morn­ing. “As with all deaths in cus­tody An Garda Siochana, the In­spec­tor of pris­ons and the Ir­ish Prison Ser­vice will be in­ves­ti­gat­ing the mat­ter. At this stage foul play is not sus­pected. “The cause of death is de­ter­mined by a jury on the ba­sis of the in­for­ma­tion pre­sented to the Coroner’s Court. “The cir­cum­stances of each death in cus­tody and in­ci­dent of self-harm are also ex­am­ined by a sui­cide preven­tion group in each in­sti­tu­tion. To date, 11 in­mates have died in cus­tody this year. There were five deaths last year and 14 in 2015. Last Jan­uary, To­mas Abuke­vi­cius died of sus­pected sui­cide at Dublin’s Moun­tjoy Prison. The 24-year-old was six months into a 16-month term for as­sault­ing a garda when he was found hanged in his cell on De­cem­ber 30. He died on Jan­uary 4 at the Mater Hospi­tal af­ter medics turned his life sup­port off.
