Pris­oner given €300 loan by jail bosses so she could buy a dog

A FE­MALE pris­oner was given a €300 loan by jail bosses to buy a dog – from be­hind bars.

The Irish Prison Ser­vice has forked out €500,000 in in­ter­est­free loans over the past three years to lags.

It’s un­der­stood the dog was bought by the pris­oner as a gift and wasn’t brought into the Dochas Cen­tre in Dublin.

An Irish Prison Ser­vice spokesman said: “Loans are given to in­mates for nu­mer­ous rea­sons, for ex­am­ple con­fir­ma­tions, com­mu­nions, fam­ily birthdays, for is­sue to fam­ily mem­bers, to pur­chase ra­dios, Playsta­tions, toi­letries, etc.”
