Campaigners call for ban on ‘pair-trawling’

Irish Daily Mirror - - SQUARE EYES -

CONSERVATIONISTS are calling on Agriculture Minister Michael Creed to ban a controversial fishing method.

The Irish Wildlife Trust said it has received reports of “pair-trawling” taking place in the south-west.

It involves two boats dragging a single net behind them to capture large quantities of small fish such as sprat.

The IWT’S Padraic Fogarty said: “Pair-trawling is just one example of destructive practices that are allowed in Irish waters.

“It’s mad that such damaging practices are not only allowed but are totally unregulated.”
