Workers avoid lay-offs after looting

- BY CLAIRE SCOTT

STAFF at the Lidl store destroyed and looted during Storm Emma will not lose their jobs, the company revealed yesterday.

The German retail giant is redeploying workers to other outlets after the store at Fortunestown, Tallaght, South Dublin was demolished by a gang using a stolen digger.

The company also said the workers have been “blown away” by the support they received from locals.

Lidl said it would not allow the criminal acts of others to impact their team in Tallaght.

On Friday evening during the height of Storm Emma the store was looted and badly damaged by a stolen JCB.

Nine men appeared in court the following day charged in connection with the incident. The clean up at the premises also began yesterday as workers were seen clearing rubble from around the almost demolished supermarket.

In a statement the company said: “A meeting was held today with our team from Fortunestown.

“We can confirm that each of the 30 team members will be redeployed to other stores in the area.

“We will not have the criminal actions of others impact on the livelihood of our hard-working team. “On behalf of the store manager Ruth and her team we would like to thank everyone for their kind words in the aftermath of this incident.

“The team are genuinely blown away by the swell of support from, not just the community that they serve daily, but from right around the country.”
