LEO Varadkar has been slammed for wearing an expensive ski jacket while meeting hard-pressed residents during the snow crisis.

The Taoiseach wore the Moncler coat, estimated to be worth €700, in Wexford on Sunday.

People Before Profit TD Brid Smith claimed it highlighted how there was “one winter for the rich, another for the poor,” suggesting those on lower pay are struggling to stay warm during the extreme weather.

She added: “Here’s something to think about when you get your heating bill for the last week – Leo’s jacket here.

“It’s a Moncler. On their website and in Brown Thomas, a Moncler jacket will set you back €600 to €700.

“That’s a lot of briquettes! One Winter for the rich, another for the poor.”

The Irish Mirror has discovered one of the most expensive Moncler jackets on sale at almost €1,700 is called the Leo – but this wasn’t the one our namesake leader picked.

Moncler’s website reads: “Designed for thrill-seekers with a need for speed, the Leo jacket teams functionality and urban style.

“Shaped like a biker, it features a soft sheepskin detail with a vaguely hipster feel. Extremely versatile, it comes with all the iconic Moncler hi-tech details to tackle the weather in style.”

COLLEAGUE

Ironically, there is also another Moncler jacket on sale called the Pascale, which might be a perfect match for Leo’s Fine Gael colleague Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe.

And that would set back the more prudent shopper just €950.

Social media was quick off the mark on Sunday when Mr Varadkar appeared for the “boots on the ground” photo opportunity in Wexford in his expensive jacket.

Some people online thought they recognised the exact model and estimated it cost €900.

Mr Varadkar had posted a picture of him wearing the jacket on his Twitter account at the weekend along with an explanation for why he was out in the snow.

He wrote: “I’ve come to Wexford this afternoon to get an update on the response operation.

“Wexford is one of the worst hit areas in the country, and access to some areas remains very challenging.

“Response agencies are in crisis management mode here at the local coordination centre.”
