Fears Brexit will reduce tablet supply

- BY CILLIAN O’BRIEN

Owen Mckeon MEDICINE shortages could get worse after Brexit unless there is urgent reform, pharmacy experts have warned.

There are more than 120 medications out of stock, including those for asthma, contraception, angina and schizophrenia.

Experts met yesterday for a Health Products Regulatory Authority initiative to develop solutions to the problem.

Medicines For Ireland blamed low prices set by the HSE for many products as a driver for shortages.

Chair Owen Mckeon added: “This unsustainable pricing has made the Irish market unattractive to global suppliers, who have to factor in development, production, regulatory and staffing costs.”
