ROYAL fever grips the nation today as newlyweds Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to touch down in Ireland.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit Dublin in their first international visit since they tied the knot in May.

The couple visit Croke Park, Trinity College, The Famine Memorial and much more as part of their two-day trip.

The programme will include official meetings with President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Meghan and Harry will also be taking time to meet members of the public and said they hope to chat to as many Irish people as possible.

The couple yesterday attended the christening of

Prince Louis, son of William and Kate, in the Chapel Royal at St James’ Palace.

Final preparations are being put in place ahead of Meghan and Harry’s visit to the capital, with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar vowing to “roll out the red carpet” for the Duke and Duchess.

Failte Ireland has said the visit will provide the country with a massive tourism boost.

Chief Paul Kelly said he hopes Prince Harry and Meghan’s trip will help tourism in the wake of Brexit challenges.

He added: “We are delighted that Meghan and Harry have chosen Ireland for their first trip abroad as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and that they are visiting some of Dublin’s brilliant visitor attractions.

“With so much media attention on the trip, all eyes will be on Ireland this week, giving us amazing exposure abroad and highlighting our rich and diverse tourism industry and excellent visitor experiences to an international audience.

“In particular, the coverage from this royal visit will provide a boost to the UK market which has been a challenge in light of Brexit.

“As the national development authority, Failte Ireland will continue to work with tourism businesses throughout the country to ensure that they can fully capitalise on the afterglow of the visit.”

Neville Isdell, founder and chairman of EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, spoke about the benefits of the royal visit.

He added: “It is an honour to be welcoming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to EPIC.

“We look forward to sharing with them the story of Irish emigration around the globe. Their visit is hugely positive for Dublin and Ireland and we hope millions of people worldwide will get a flavour of Irish culture and history.”
