BUCKS Fizz star Jay Aston is recovering after an operation yesterday for mouth cancer.

A spokesman for the singer, 57, said that “all went well” during surgery to remove a section of her tongue.

Bandmate Cheryl Baker, 64, said yesterday before Jay went to hospital: “Cannot wait for this to be over for you, Jay. Looking forward to ripping skirts off with you soon. With so many thoughts, wishes and prayers, I’m sure you will sail through this.” Jay had already had part of her tongue removed in a bid to beat the cancer and was told the latest op could end her singing career.

The Mirror reported last week how she had returned to the studio for what could be the final time to record vocals for a Christmas album from the band, now called The Fizz.

She said: “It’s been a pleasure to get back. My voice has returned, not in full – but almost.”

Jay The album will be finished by Cheryl, their bandmate Mike Nolan and producer Mike Stock as Jay recovers. “The show must go on,” she said.
