Trib­utes paid af­ter jockey Laura, 25, dies of cancer

Laura Barry IRISH jockey Laura Barry has passed away aged 25 af­ter a bat­tle with cancer.

She was due to marry part­ner Ben Hamil­ton, brother of jockey Tony, to­day.

Laura was a ap­pren­tice of

Richard Fa­hey.

Fa­hey fought back the tears as he spoke of her af­ter his horse Zap claimed a poignant vic­tory at the Sil­very Bun­bury Cup at New­mar­ket.

He said: “She was a won­der­ful girl and will be truly missed. She was loved by ev­ery­one.

“She was a very tough girl, but had been suf­fer­ing for a long time. She was just such a star and never com­plained.”

Pal Gemma Tutty added: “She was so tremen­dously brave and fought tena­ciously right un­til the end.

“We made mem­o­ries to­gether that will last a life­time and I’m so grate­ful rac­ing brought us to­gether. I couldn’t be prouder to call her my best friend.”

Laura be­gan suf­fer­ing pain in her left leg in 2016 and was di­ag­nosed with a rare and ag­gres­sive tu­mour.

For­mer cham­pion jockey Paul Hana­gan, who worked with her dur­ing her time un­der Fa­hey, said: “Ben and her were sup­posed to be get­ting mar­ried this week­end and that only makes it even more sad.” for­mer trainer
