Dear Diarmuid

This plant has appeared from nowhere, could you identify it please? Joan, Hemel Hempstead, Herts

Hi Joan

This looks like Nicandra physalodes. It’s also known as the shoo fly plant as it’s believed to repel whitefly.

Its seed is sometimes used in bird feed so it can pop up as a weed in gardens, especially near bird feeding tables. Its flowers are violet and the lantern seed pods are also attractive – lovely for cutting and drying for winter floral arrangements.

Diarmuid
