Flights hit by ground staff strike action

Baggage handler A STRIKE by baggage handlers in Belgium has led to flights from Dublin being cancelled or diverted.

Yesterday’s 6.30am Aer Lingus service to Brussels was grounded while two Ryanair flights from the capital had to be diverted.

Aviapartne­r handles baggage in Brussels for 30 airlines including Ryanair, TUI Airways, British Airways, Easyjet, and Royal Air Maroc.

In total more than 100 outbound and inbound flights to the Belgian capital were cancelled.

Even when the strike ends there may still be disruption as airlines work to clear the backlogs.

Passengers are asked to check with their carrier before travelling. TWO gardai had a lucky escape when their car overturned as they responded to a call yesterday.

A man and a woman were in the vehicle when it flipped on to its roof on Pigeon House Road in Ringsend, Dublin shortly after 5pm.

Both officers were brought to St Vincent’s Hospital where they were being treated last night for minor injuries.

They were responding to a call regarding youths gathering bonfire fuel. Gardai have confirmed they are currently investigat­ing the dramatic incident.

A spokesman said: “Gardai in Irishtown are investigat­ing an official vehicle involved in a road traffic collision that occurred at approximat­ely 5pm.

“Two members (one male and one female) were in the vehicle when it overturned.

“No other persons were involved in the road traffic collision. Investigat­ions ongoing.”
