it’s time ministers must put words into action
THE Government has serious questions to answer over today’s claims by Cian O’carroll.
Since the start of this shameful fiasco, ministers have sought to assure everyone that they stand fully behind the affected women.
Mr O’carroll’s trojan work on this scandal leaves those claims completely open to question. He is putting his professional reputation on the line to make it clear that investigators charged with probing what happened were doing so with one hand tied behind their backs.
He reveals, also, that tragic Emma Mhic Mhathuna had four smears, but none identified precancerous cells.
What a fitting tribute it would be to this strong, brave, untiring woman if we finally knew got to the truth, a month after her death. But we clearly do not. What every woman in this country needs is full confidence in Cervicalcheck.
But this will never be achieved until every rock is overturned in this sorry saga.
The Government, needing to be seen to act, has started the engine but it appears to have left little fuel in the tank to drive it to a satisfactory conclusion. Its reputation hinges on seeing this through to the bitter end.
