Evil rapist in ‘shot by cop’ wish

Violent sex fiend threatened to cut off hands and kill victim

- BY NIALL O’CONNOR

CRAZED sex attacker Eoin Berkley has a twisted fantasy to be shot dead by elite armed cops, the Irish Mirror reveals.

The 25-year-old was caged yesterday for 14 years for the brutal rape and torture of a Spanish teenager.

A source said: “He told gardai he wants to be shot dead by the ERU and tried that in a siege.”

A SEX beast who brutally raped and held a Spanish student captive for more than 21 hours was jailed yesterday.

Scumbag Eoin Berkley, 25, smiled as the 14-year sentence was handed down but earlier he sat with his head bowed as details of his sick crimes were outlined.

He terrorised the teenager, drugging and tying her up as he assaulted her.

Berkley also told her he had killed six people, making her believe he would murder her too.

The student, then aged 18, finally escaped when the rapist fell asleep.

Berkley, from North Dublin, wrote “I’m so sorry” in his own blood on the wall of a holding cell while was detained for questioning.

On July 15 and 16 last year, he raped her three times, tied her up with a dog lead, attempted to strangle her and threatened to kill her and cut off her hands.

The Irish Mirror can also reveal today how:

■ Berkley has a fantasy to be shot dead by the Emergency Response Unit and was involved in a siege with a replica gun at his house when the elite officers were alerted

■ Gardai do not believe he has killed or raped before

■ Investigators believe he is one of the most dangerous sex offenders they have ever detained

■ Berkley was accused of painting homophobic graffiti across the walls of the George pub in Dublin just weeks before the rape, daubing “F ***** s out, f ***** , f ***** bar, homo f**” in May 2017, and

■ Gardai identified him on CCTV but also interviewed 240 motorists who passed the scene on the day as part of their inquiries.

A source said: “Berkley is the most dangerous criminal investigators have come across in a long time.

“He told gardai he wants to be shot dead by the ERU and tried that in a siege.

“Without doubt this crime was the culmination of a significant mental frenzy of twisted fantasies.

“All the guards knew he was going to do something horrific – but the system left everyone down.

“Investigators believe he will reoffend almost instantly when he emerges from prison.”

Gardai probing the investigation interviewed hundreds of people.

Berkley, who had a mohawk haircut at the time, was seen on a Luas in the company of his victim.

But gardai also had to track down 240 motorists who passed through a vehicle registration camera system near the scene.

At the Central Criminal Court yesterday, Mr Justice Michael White described his crimes as “horrific” and told him he would have to take responsibility for his actions.

He said Berkley had made “bloodcurdling” threats and carried out extreme degradation and violence against his victim.

The judge added: “Mr Berkley must bear personal responsibility for this most horrific of crimes.”

Previously, Det Garda Bryan Hunt, from Irishtown Garda station, told the judge the victim was raped three times when she was held captive by Berkley in a tent at the derelict Glass Bottle Factory near Sandymount in South Dublin.

The court heard the accused has 25 previous convictions including unlawful possession of knives and threatening and abusive behaviour.

The student had only been in Dublin for a day when she met Berkley on a quayside boardwalk.

The sicko convinced her he lived on the beach and invited her to see where he lived.

She agreed and walked with him to the derelict Glass Bottle Factory site where he had pitched a number of tents. The court heard how once inside the tent Berkley’s mood changed, he pushed her to the ground and grabbed her hands.

She begged him to stop but he laughed and told her she was stupid and that he had raped and murdered before.

The student left the tent but Berkley, from Hampton Wood Way in Finglas, dragged her back in.

The judge heard he tied her hands behind her back using a dog leash and told her he had previously killed six people and she was going to be his seventh victim.

Berkley repeatedly tried to strangle her and at one point he

picked up a small saw and told her if she didn’t stop struggling he would cut off her hands.

The woman begged the accused to murder her in the least painful way and he gave her six tablets.

She took the medication and fell down and he began abusing her.

The court heard that on the Sunday he told her he wasn’t going to kill her until the next day.

The accused threatened her that if she tried to run away he would throw a rock at her head.

The victim later escaped when Berkley fell asleep.

In the meantime, the family the woman was staying with in Dublin and her parents in Spain had raised the alarm when she failed to make contact on Saturday evening.

In horrifying evidence the victim rang her father, telling him she was running from a man and said: “I’ve been kidnapped. I’m going to be killed.” Her dad told the court this was the worst phone call a father could ever get.

Berkley’s defence counsel pointed to mitigating evidence about his difficult childhood and his significant history of a profound mental health disorder.

Mr Justice White said he must consider the horrific nature of the crime but also consider the early guilty plea.

He imposed the 14 year-sentence to run concurrently but backdated it to July 21 last year when Berkley entered custody.
