Joey will learn from this

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

JOE SCHMIDT believes Joey Carbery will learn a valuable lesson from his hour-long shift against Italy.

Having opened the season with a run of starts at No.10 for Munster, this was the 23-year-old’s chance to put some of that experience to use in Soldier Field.

It didn’t quite go to plan.

Carbery (above) kicked well and nailed his five conversion attempts but overall it was a mixed display as he looked to impress in the absence of Johnny Sexton.

Throwing an intercept pass towards the end of the first quarter didn’t help as it put Ireland on the backfoot for the remainder of that opening half.

“He’ll learn from that decision,” said Schmidt. “The last time we were here in New Jersey, he got charged down twice but he did a charge down himself on Saturday.

“He’s a kid that learns well and works hard. Certainly that wide pass, it never looked really like it was on. He’ll look back on that and build something else into his game.

“Joey didn’t run on Saturday, I just felt he was trying really hard to bring everyone else into the game and one of the strengths of Joey’s game is bringing himself to the fore.

“I hope he gets a bit of confidence from what he did and mixes that up a little bit.”
